Pitching that Isn’t Salesy with Liz Heflin

| 2-min read Stay updated

When I got a pitch from today’s guest in my LinkedIn messages, I ignored it.

I don’t mind when people pitch me, as long as it’s relevant to me, which it was.

In fact, it was an excellent pitch with a lot of value...

...but what she was offering wasn’t of interest and I didn’t have time to focus on it.

Then, a month or so later, she resent the pitch via email, which I appreciated, because I know that once is not nearly enough if you’re trying to get someone’s attention.

This time, I did respond – not to what she was offering, but to ask if I could use her pitch as an excellent example.

I wanted to show the members in my Simplest Marketing Plan Plus program what a good pitch looks like.

She was so gracious and immediately said yes.

But when I asked my members what they thought of it, most said things like:

  • "Too direct."
  • "Too bold!"
  • "Too salesy."

I disagreed.

It had everything a good pitch needed – the problem was me, the recipient -- not the sender of the message or the message sent.

I just wasn’t in the market for what she was offering.

You see, there’s nothing wrong with pitching – what matters is relevance and timing.

I am, however, always in the market for people who practice what I preach.

And clearly Liz Heflin fits that description.

So I invited her to be a guest on the Marketing Mentor Podcast

I do hope this conversation will change your mindset – just a little bit – about the power of pitching. Because, as I like to say...

Pitching is in the eye of the recipient, not the sender.

All you can do is be as enthusiastic and generous as possible – and not take silence or rejection personally. Easier said than done, I know. But well worth the effort, I can guarantee it.

In fact, Liz's pitch turned out to be the beginning of a lovely networking relationship. Who knows where it will lead?
